The primary objective of a UX designer is to offer an engaging and enjoyable user experience. To achieve a user-centric design, a well-defined UX process must be in place. Throughout this process, the UX designer must communicate, analyze, interpret feedback and determine improvements wherever needed. What is the UX Process?

The user experience design process is the iterative method adapted by designers to continuously polish and improve their designs with the help of user feedback.

According to Frank Chimero, the famous designer, “People ignore design that ignores people”.

Adapting a UX process is primary to obtaining optimal user experience. A UX process is deemed successful only if the designer obtains user inputs at every phase and incorporates this feedback in the design.

There is no single golden rule for the UX design process. It can vary between organizations, designers, and the project.

Stages in the UX Process

  1. Understand Requirements
  2. According to Paul Boag, “To be a great designer, you need to look a little deeper into how people think and act.”

    To arrive at a design solution, first, the problem at hand must be understood. Various methods of requirements analysis followed by the design team are:

    • Conduction personal and contextual interviews
    • Meetings and brainstorming with clients
    • Analyze use cases and user personas in detail

    The stakeholders involved in this stage are the design team and the product manager.

  3. Perform Research
  4. Research in the UX process helps to understand how the world is implementing the design features. Research is performed by the design team by:

    • Studying competitors and their strategies
    • Obtaining complete domain knowledge of business
    • Getting inspired by innovative ideas by competitive designers.

    The stakeholders involved in this stage are the design team.

  5. Drawings and Sketches
  6. As the adage goes “A picture is worth a thousand words, nothing can replace a drawing, whiteboard or paper sketches to get a design idea through to the team members.

    Wireframe testing and evaluation features in this stage. The stakeholders involved in this phase are the design team, technical team and product managers.

  7. Design/ Prototype
  8. Once the design layout and content flow are finalized, images and themes are applied to the interface. The design principles and guidelines are shared with the development and technical team to receive their feedback

    The development team goes on to build a working prototype based on the specifications.

    The stakeholders involved in this stage are the design team, development team and product managers.

  9. Implement
  10. The implementation of the product is done simultaneously with the design phase. The technical team and developers start to code back end components and integrate with the user interface once ready.  There are chances of minor modifications in design features during this stage. The stakeholders involved here are the design and development team.

  11. Evaluate
  • Once all stakeholders are satisfied with the functionality of the system, evaluation is performed based on the following metrics:
  • Usability
  • Search capabilities for the end-user
  • Flexibility and Scalability
  • The solution to the problems of the end-user
  • Ability to enrich the user experience
